It's 'A' Week on Facebook.
I'm a day early, but what they hey, it's probably tomorrow somewhere in the world.
Today kicks off a week where the 'A' Week campaign hopes all atheists on Facebook will set their profile picks to Richard Dawkins' scarlet 'A'. I'm not a huge fan of that symbol, but it's simple, recognizable and works as well as any other symbol. The point is to raise awareness of atheists, that there are literally millions of people who live their lives just fine without religion and find it quite easy to be "good without god." That's a laudable goal I think. Most people will tell you they don't know any atheists, but chances are they do. We're in the minority but we're at least two to five percent of the population in the U.S. (much more if you count those who identify as agnostic) and we're growing in number. And surely, part of any activist atheist movement should be to increase visibility of atheists as normal, everyday people. In other words, we need to destigmatize atheism and part of the way we do that is by helping people to realize that lack of belief in gods is as normal as any other opinion. So that's why I'm displaying the 'A' on my Facebook profile this week. How about you?
